Liat Steir-Livny / “As the Clay in the Potter's Hand”:

Memory, Space and Image in the Zionist Press in Eretz Israel and the United States 1945-1948

The article analyses the way European Jewry in the Holocaust and in the D.P Camps was represented in the Press of Zionist Organizations in Palestine and the United States in the period from 1945 to 1948. The publications surveyed in the article are weekly and monthly journals of mainstream organizations in Palestine (Jewish National Fund, Keren Hayesod, General Federation of Labor) and those published by and for American Jewry (Hadassah, Joint Distribution Committee, Americans for the Haganah). In the late 1940s, these organizations wished to call the world's attention to the hardships that European Jewry had experienced, and the need to solve the displaced persons problem and establish a Jewish State in Palestine. While Jewish organizations in Palestine and the USA operated under the same ideological umbrella, the separate cultural system in the respective countries led to different representations of European Jewry during and after the Holocaust.
